Limited Edition Warning
Avoid commercial limited editions i.e. signed and numbered
reproductions. These are not the same as original prints.
If you don't know the difference between photo-mechanical
copies and traditional fine prints, you should read up on
the subject, ask a museum curator about this, or better yet,
get the facts from a printmaker directly.
Limited Edition is a marketing strategy designed to create
the impression of scarcity (hence value) in common copies
of paintings. New digital printing processes, like giclee
(ghee-clay), are very slick and priced right up there with
original prints. They are the worst value in prints because
a) they cost more than other reproductions b) they are not
original prints, like you find in museums and good private
collections c) people who know prints consider artificial
limited editions an unfortunate deception on the unsuspecting
public.
Buyer beware.
